SINGAPORE: Tensions are running high in Hong Kong after a massive riot broke out last week, injuring more than 1,000 people and causing the worst civil unrest to hit the Chinese-ruled city since its handover from Britain in 1997.

Adel is the first Indonesian journalist to write a book about the Islamic State...
Ibu – Abdi, 35, an unmarried, unemployed mother of three, grew up in an orthodox Muslim family, listening to an all-encompassing indoctrination from an early age to reject Western influence and embrace jihad.
“I have a little daughter and when she goes to school, the teachers don’t let her speak in Indonesian; they force her to speak in Arabic,” she says. “I would advise her to learn English.”
Adel spent about a year with the Islamic State and became a “martyr” – a suicide bomber, an attack on a military post or a bombing of civilian targets. She would carry out a suicide attack, killing herself and fellow fighters.
On the surface, Adel appears to be describing a well-known phenomenon among Indonesian youth: a desire to feel connected to the Islamic State.
But Adel’s explanation is a little different: “The reason I joined is that the Islamic State only wants to create an Islamic state.”
She first became interested in IS while living in Saudi Arabia, studying at King Saud University. 0b46394aab
